THE river GAUJA description

The river increases in depth and width as it turns to the north and hurries toward Estonian borders. In these parts the river winds through forests and lush water meadows and there are fewer visitors than in the upper reaches. There is a astonishingly beautiful scenary as far as the eye can see in the area around Gulbene, Aluksne and Valka.

If you want to get a fair impression of the Gauja this is probably the right place to start your journey. Sandstone crags with towering pines looking down into dark and brooding pools are a well-known image of the Gauja, but there is much more to discover as well.

In the next part of your trip the river bed is straight for 3 km. It was hand made in the last century by unemployed people. This installation was necessary because the river Gauja has been an important traffic way for wood transport in spring, when the water level is high. Of course there are many legends about the people jobs when they had to booze in every big stop near the river like Strenci or Valmiera.

No „Jaunarājiem” līdz Valmieras centram 4 km. Ievērojamākais objekts ceļā ir Stāvkrasti ~ 0.5 km garš smilšu stāvkrasts. Gauja šeit regulāri to izskalo un ja netiks veikti krastu nostiprināšanas darbi, Gauja drīz sasniegs tuvējo Daliņa stadionu.

Pulkas - Valmiera

5 km augšpus Strenčiem pie likteņa varā atstātajām „Pulku” mājām ir samērā ērta piekļūšanas vieta Gaujai. Šeit plaša smilšaina sēre, ērta vieta peldēšanai un maršruta uzsākšanai. Visapkārt plešas plaši meža masīvi. Upe dažkārt met asus līkumus, tajā iespējams sastapt vairākas lielas salas. Posmā līdz Strenčiem nopietnu šķēršļu nav, tomēr kuģošanai tas ir interesants.

Strenču pilsēta no upes tikpat kā nav pamanāma. Ūdenstūristi maršrutu parasti sāk no autoceļa tilta (27 km līdz Valmierai) vai no ērtās pļaviņas pie Strenču estrādes, kur atrodas piemineklis Gaujas plostniekiem. No autoceļa tilta līdz dzelzceļa tiltam 3.8 km.

Vēl 0.5 km tālāk Gaujā no labās puses ietek Jumaras upīte. Šeit ir GNP robeža (5 km no Valmieras).

Upes krastos parādās pirmie smilšakmens atsegumi, kur lejpus Jumaras ietekai stāvā upes labajā krastā viesu nams „Straupnieki” (9 km no Valmieras). Gaujas krasti kļūst arvien krāšņāki. Daudz vecupju, kurās saimnieko bebri.

Lejpus Miegupītes ietekas upes kreisajā krastā GNP tūristu apmetne „Sapa” (11 km no Valmieras).

Spilgtāk sāk iezīmēties senleja ar raksturīgajiem smilšakmens atsegumiem. Jāmin baltā smilšakmens atsegums upes kreisajā krastā – Liepas iezis jeb Baltās klintis (apmēram 4 km no Miegupītes ietekas).

Vēl pēc neliela attāluma, upes labajā krastā paceļas lieliskais Sietiņiezis (16 km no Valmieras). Tas ir aizsargājamais ģeoloģiskais objekts. Vislabāk Sietiņiezi apskatīt, ejot ar kājām pa taku.

2 km lejup no Sietiņieža GNP tūristu apmetne „Grīviņi”, no kuras vēl pēc neliela attāluma maršruta galapunkts „Caunītes”, kuras atrodas upes labajā krastā (20 km no Valmieras).

Iepretī Caunītēm upes kreisajā krastā 0.5 km attālumā no upes augstākās klints Gaujas senlejā, Līču-Lanģu klintis, uz kurām pa samērā mežonīgu taku iespējams veikt nelielu pārgājienu.
